350-Bed Community Health System: Refreshing 120 patient rooms without a purchase order

Situation

Two med-surg floors were due for a refresh, but the capital budget only covered new beds for one. Furniture from a recently closed unit sat unused in storage at another site.

Approach

Facilities browsed the shared catalog, requested the beds and bedside furniture they needed and received an estimate covering cleaning and delivery. Items were inspected, reupholstered where needed and installed floor by floor.

We stopped thinking of furniture as a purchase and started thinking of it as inventory we already own.

Diane Holloway — Director of Facilities, Community Health System

Results

All 120 rooms were refreshed in under ten weeks and the project avoided a new-furniture purchase for the second floor. Every moved item now has a tracked location and history.
